The early days...
The Menai Dragons Basketball Club started with a group of parents (from basketball backgrounds) looking to give their children the same experiences as they had.
In the mid-to-late 1980's, a small group of parents met with the General Manager of Sutherland Basketball Association and mapped out a plan to establish a structured club. The original members were Stephen Bell, Andy Andreijunas and Mick Carlisle, with Colleen Corkeron, the General Manager of Sutherland District Basketball Association.

A growing club...
From the few teams that started at the club's establishment, the competition itself slowly began to take form. As the Menai area also grew, the Club slowly became one of the biggest sporting clubs in the Sutherland Shire.
The Club used Menai High School's gymnasium as its home court to run our Saturday Learn to Play Competition. We would start in the morning and finish at night. We also entered Junior and Senior Male and Female teams in the Sutherland Basketball Association Competition.

Menai Indoor Sport Centre...
In September 2004, Sutherland Shire Council opened the Menai Indoor Sports Centre and a new era for numerous indoor sports began. The Club was actively involved in all stages of the Centre's development and have stepped up to use the four basketball courts as much as possible.
Menai Dragons Basketball Club...
Our Saturday Competition now caters for all age groups including Under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 & 18, and has become a feature of the Saturday morning sporting culture in this area. Currently our competitions run all year round in Summer (October to March) and Winter (April to September). We have designated Learn to Play for the beginners as well as structured competitions. We also cater for Senior Men and Women on Monday and Tuesday nights.
The Club also enters teams in the Sutherland Basketball Competition throughout the week. These teams represent Menai Dragons in inter-area competitions, with Menai Dragons supplying majority of the players/teams in those competitions.
We encourage our junior players to also take up refereeing, coaching and administrative roles within the club. Without these roles, our great club would not be where it is today. Our volunteers, administrators, coaches, managers, referees, supporters and players should be very proud of what we have achieved.

What's next...
Our Club's goals are to continue to provide this great game to all participants in the Sutherland Shire (and beyond). We will continue to have teams in the Sutherland Basketball Competitions and will always strive to grow our Saturday Competition.
We aim to continue to grow our referee and coaching programs, to build our presence in the Shire and to promote ourselves in schools, in the area and through social media.
